Subsea 7 and BP recognised with top prize at Offshore Achievement Awards 2018

COLLABORATION IS KEY TO UNLOCKING STRANDED
FIVE-MILLION-BARREL NORTH SEA OIL FIELD

A collaborative approach to successfully unlocking recovery from a long-stranded North Sea oil field earned BP and Subsea 7 a top accolade at the prestigious SPE Offshore Achievement Awards in Aberdeen last night [March 22].

BP and Subsea 7 were presented with the Collaboration Award during a ceremony at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The prize recognises the efforts of a multi-company team working together to achieve outstanding results on an offshore oil and gas project.

The two companies worked closely together to bring the BP-operated Arundel field into production - 17 years after it was first discovered. The field, located in the Central North Sea 15 kilometres north of the Andrew platform, was discovered in 2000 but proved challenging to develop.

BP and Subsea 7 used innovative techniques to insulate a new pipeline, upcycled existing equipment and adopted a flexible approach to subsea vessel scheduling.

First oil from Arundel was achieved in September 2017. The field, which is tied back to the BP-operated Andrew platform, is expected to contain around five million barrels of recoverable oil.

BP North Sea Regional President, Mark Thomas, said: “Bringing such a challenging field safely online only 18 months after sanction is testament to the expertise and commitment of all those working on the project.

“Arundel is a great example of a field which could have easily been stranded but which we managed to maximise the economic recovery of through innovative and collaborative working. I’m extremely proud of what has been achieved here. The Offshore Achievement Award is recognition from all the teams who helped us reach this milestone.”

Subsea 7 Business Unit Director, Scott Cameron, added: “We are delighted to receive this accolade with BP, which recognises the engineering, upcycling capabilities and innovative thinking demonstrated by the entire team.

“Both BP and Subsea 7 worked extremely hard to turn a technically challenging field into a demonstration of optimised well performance, which has been delivered under budget with subsea costs savings of 50% prior to sanction and a further 30% post sanction.”
