Degree: BSc (HONS) Surveying and Mapping Science
Institute affiliated with: RICS

Project Experience

The company came across very well in the university presentations and the proposed pay as well as promotion and various training schemes was particularly attractive.

Since joining I have worked on construction, diving support and survey vessels, giving me the opportunity to learn and work with various equipment ranging from under water gyros through to Sonardyne and Simrad LBL Systems.  As a trainee my role was to observe, assist and learn company practices. To view practices in all departments allowing me assess how to better fulfil my future role as surveyor within the company.

Current Role

My role now is to question all equipment and software settings prior to data collection to ensure that correct and high quality data is collected. I continually view all data collected in real time to ensure that (a) quality data is collected and (b) that whoever is processing the data can do so more easily.

I enjoy getting the opportunity to work with such a wide range of people with varying backgrounds to mine. Getting the chance to see some part of different countries is an added bonus.  I like knowing that Subsea7 is interested in my personal and professional development; this has been further proven to me by their support by financially backing my application for the Assessment of Professional Competence through the RICS.

Stuart Fyfe, Survey Graduate

Degree: BSc (Hons) Topographic Science

Project Experience

Working for a large multi-discipline company with the opportunity of working on a wide range of projects is what attracted me to join Subsea 7.

I have worked on the following projects:

Toisa Perseus – Flowline and suction anchor installations
South Arne – LRK base station installation
Lingue – Grapnel run operations
Castoro Sei – Pipelay operations on anchor handling barge
Rockwater 1 – Dive support operations and flowline installations
Mansal 19 – Pipeline inspection and pre-lay surveys
Semi 2 – Dive support operations
Toisa Polaris - Dive support operations
Subsea Viking – Mattress and flowline installations
Toisa Perseus – Flowline loadout
Seisranger - As-laid and out of straightness as-trenched surveys

On my first project offshore I was an Associate Surveyor working alongside the on-line surveyor and experiencing at first hand on-line survey operations. Gradually I was given more responsibility as I gained more experience working on-line by myself.

Current Role

I am now a Hydrographic Surveyor with the responsibility of solely running the on-line survey spread on a variety of projects. I have travelled quite extensively during my time with the company. This has included trips to Norway, Denmark, Peru, Panama, Holland and the US.

I work a 170 day contract which effectively means that it is possible to have half the year off whilst working offshore. In addition to this the opportunities to progress are good. Additionally the competency scheme run by Subsea 7 provides an opportunity for relatively quick promotion within the company in conjunction with external schemes such as the RICS.
