FAQ

If you’re serious about working for Subsea 7, you’ll probably have a few questions you’d like to ask us, here are a selection of the frequently asked questions we’ve received along with our responses.

One more thing, please remember that this information is here to help you take your best shot – it’s not a guarantee of success.

1. I want to get into the oil industry. Where do I start?

Subsea 7 is one of the world's leading subsea engineering and construction companies. We offer expertise and assets that make Subsea, Umbilical, Riser and Flowline (SURF) field development possible.

Our business is exclusively focussed on the niche ‘Subsea' sector, specifically Subsea field development and Inspection, Repair and Maintenance.

We have two business lines that are directly related to Subsea activities but sit outside our core Subsea field development and IRM business, i-Tech and Veripos.

It is against this background that Subsea 7 will continue to look at advancing deepwater technology through investment in new assets and equipment, sponsorship of an aggressive R&D programme and participation in joint industry projects that address a wide range of deepwater production issues.

So just like any other business in the oil & gas sector, we require people with varying skills and experience and there are a multitude of opportunities to join us both as an experienced individual or trainee. As we recognise the need to grow our skill pool, we have established global apprenticeship schemes, graduate and engineering conversion programmes to meet our business needs. Everyone is given the opportunity to progress and gain more experience in a diverse and challening environment. Have a browse around our current opportunities page to see what type of people we are currently looking for.

2. How do I apply for a position with Subsea 7?

All our current vacancies globally are advertised under our current opportunities page of our website. In addition to this, vacancies are also advertised on international job boards, and within local, national and industry specific newspapers and publications. We also use a core number of Recruitment Agencies who are designated preferred suppliers and committed to our high standards and service levels. The recruitment team in each location are responsible for processing CV’s and managing the recruitment life cycle, ensuring that all applications are treated in confidence and dealt with appropriately in line with our company values and regional employment legislation.

3. What training opportunities are available?

When you join Subsea 7 you will be given every opportunity to develop your skills and experience and we will ensure that you are given all the necessary training required to carry out your job.

Examples of training available to you include:

•   Supervisory Development

4. Does Subsea 7 offer work placements?

Yes.  We offer a number of ad-hoc placements in a variety of departments.  These are advertised within universities, schools and colleges to attract the relevant student or school leaver.  Due to increased legislation and health and safety issues we are encouraged to attract using these methods.

5. How do I secure a job offshore?

Offshore vacancies are managed in several ways.  In the UK all offshore crews are managed through the offshore personnel department.  Mariners are employed via our Norwegian office and external agencies.  Elsewhere vacancies are handled by the local Human Resources teams.  We engage many nationalities on board our vessels.

When applying for an offshore based job you will find some very useful information at our trade association website:

http://www.imca-int.com

IMCA is the international trade association representing offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies. You will be able to gain further information relating to careers in the Oil industry including the minimum entry requirements/qualifications for some positions.

6. How should I prepare my CV?

We see lots of CV’s and career resumes of different styles and structures but in the main your CV is used to help us assess your suitability for a job.  Therefore it should include an easy-to-follow breakdown of your career, skills, experience and qualities.  It is also important to include all relevant training courses and qualifications and updating your CV regularly can help guard against possible shortfalls in your skills portfolio.

Your career history should be presented in chronological order working back from the present day through to your first post. This helps us to see your most recent achievements and is particularly more pertinent and meaningful for candidates with many years of experience.

If you tailor your CV to suit the profile of the particular job that you are applying for, it can help to emphasise the match between the qualities that you possess and what we are looking for.

7. How should I prepare for interview?

The most important thing you must do before attending an interview is to find out as much about Subsea 7 as you can and if you have reached this FAQ page, you are on the right track!  Show that you are interested in the company rather than simply seeking a job anywhere.  It is also advisable to prepare some questions relevant to the job you have applied for and also about the company in general.

Subsea 7 use a number of selection methods i.e. competency based interviews, in-tray exercises, presentations and personality profiling.  These, used in conjuction with standard selection methods provide us with a much better match to both the company and the job.  Throughout the course of the interview you will be asked to respond to a number of fairly standard questions.  Consider your strengths and weaknesses and most importantly be honest!  Questions can relate to specific examples or scenarios which help to determine your experience, ability and knowledge.  Consider your long term career goals and your personal attributes.  Again be honest!

9. Does Subsea 7 run any Apprenticeship schemes?

Yes.  We offer Modern Apprenticeships in a variety of disciplines including mechanical and electrical.  The Apprenticeship scheme takes approximately 4 years to complete and incorporates formal qualifications (up to HND level) combined with work place assessment that is competence based.

Good Luck!!
